Basic Respirator
A breathing mask fits over your face and is used to ensure you breathe clean air. Respirators fall into two main categories.

Air Purifying Respirators (APR)
These Respirators use portable filters to clean the air of contaminants. These filters have limitations, so it is important to understand the potential contaminants to which the wearer may be exposed. It is also important to consider whether the oxygen level is adequate (19.5%). This is by far the most common type of Respirator and includes the vast majority of Respirators you will see in both civilian and professional use.
The proper functioning of a gas mask is entirely dependent on a comfortable and airtight fit. A gas mask must be vacuum sealed, which means it must be the right size and fit your face perfectly.

A medium size mask is a good choice for many people, but the fit is not guaranteed. You must try the mask on in advance to make sure it will work when you need it. Here's how you do it.

1 Make sure the straps are fully unfastened and pulled to the front of the mask so they don't get in your way.

2 Place your chin in the chin cup and roll the mask upwards from your chin to your face. Make sure your nose is in the nasal mask. You may need to wear the mask several times to get it on correctly.

3 Hold the mask in place and pull the straps to the appropriate position at the back of your head.

4 Fasten each strap securely in the following order: middle strap, top strap, then bottom strap.

5 Cover the filter with your hand and take a quick deep breath to test the seal. This is a negative pressure test. You should feel the mask tighten around your face and that no air is entering the mask. If this does not happen, repeat steps 1-4.
